Mindaugas Pakalnis was born in a small Lithuanian town Jonava. He studied architecture and city planning at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University. His diploma work was done in the academy Bauhaus Dessau, Germany. After graduation he spent 4 years in Germany working in a small architectural office doing renovation projects for medieval buildings. In 1996 he moved back to Lithuania and worked as a city planner in the company Vilniaus planas owned by Vilnius municipality. From 2004 to 2013 he was the chief architect of this company. He took part in developing the major development projects of Vilnius city – master plan, approved in 2007, strategic development plan, development concepts for different parts of the city. He was also involved in city planning projects in other Lithuanian cities - Kaunas, Klaipėda, Panevežys, Mažeikiai. Since 1996, he has been giving lectures in urban planning at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University. Since 2007 he has been acting as a member of the board of the Union of Architects of Lithuania. During the last few years Mindaugas performed different researches in investigating present urban development challenges of Lithuanian cities, stressing discussions on consequences of urban sprawl, lost density, social impacts of segregation on the cities, trying to find out vital models for city renovation. At the moment Mindaugas’ main focus is on sustainable engineering and design - we’ll hear more about it at TEDxVilnius 2014.
